Happy New Year!

This is my first ZBrush sculpt for 2015. This year is dedicated to improving my skill in portraiture and anatomy. I’ll be doing a series of celebrity portraits. Hope you can guess this one. If not the fault is probably mine. I’m still training myself.

Thanks George and Marv

My favourite comic book of the 1980s was the New Teen Titans. Writer Marv Wolfman and artist George Perez created characters that appealed to my generation of comic book readers. They were teenagers when I was a teenager and I related to them growing into their adulthood. It was more enjoyable reading stories about them growing up then it was reading the aimless disaster that lead to the New Titans and the Team Titans (sorry Marv). Once they weren’t teenagers they became like all the other super hero teams with all the same tropes. In memory of the original *New* Teen Titans here is my Zbrush illustration.

Ghana is not Guyana. Ghana gained its independence under the leadership of Kwame Nkrumah (Osagyefo) in 1957. Guyana is a country in South America that became independent in 1966. Ghana is in Africa.

Ghana is not Guinea. Although both countries are in Africa, Guinea is a former French colony located 979.32 km (608.52 miles) northwest of Ghana. Ghana is a former British colony.

Ghana is not Equatorial Guinea. That is a third country in Africa.

Ghana is not Guinea-Bissau. That is a fourth country in Africa.

Ghana is not French Guiana. That is a second country in South America.

Ghana is not Uganda. Uganda is an African country 3765.52 km (2339.79 miles) southeast of Ghana.

Ghana is not Papua New Guinea. Papua New Guinea is part of the island of New Guinea northeast of Australia.

Finally Australia is not Austria. Austria is a country in Europe. Australia is a continent and a country. Hope that clears things up.

I attended the first ever ZBrush summit online. The summit had great presenters like Dominic Qwek a creature & character artist for Blizzard Entertainment, freelance artist Maarten Verhoeven and 3D Systems/Gentle Giant Studios. During this summit Pixologic announced that Zbrush will be getting new features making it an even more powerful tool.

New ZBrush features for 4R7

New dynamic subdivision mode: This appears to be similar to splines in other 3d apps but it allows the artist to crease and uncrease any edge on the fly with extremely low polycounts.

New box modelling mode: ZBrush will now allow artists to box model in a method similar to Silo. It is even easier than Silo to put holes in objects and join them together.

New Nano-mesh mode: Allows an artist to auto populate a scene with hundreds of clones of a single modelled object at low polycounts.

Export to KeyShot: A special version of KeyShot will be made available for $349 US to create quick high quality renders of ZBrush models. The introductory price will be $249 US but it will go to the regular price of $349 later.

Finally 64 bit ZBrush: Although ZBrush 4R7 will be the last 32 bit version of ZBrush, Pixological will also release a public beta of a 64 bit version of ZBrush 4R7! ZBrush 5 will be fully 64b bit. With access to more memory plus all the previously mentioned low polycount modes, ZBrush could handle even larger more complex models than it currently does.

FREE Upgrade for existing ZBrush users

As with previous versions of ZBrush, the upgrade to 4R7 is free. Will the upgrade to ZBrush 5 be free?

Speculation

If Pixologic adds animation capabilities more sophisticated than ZSphere rigging to ZBrush, then potentially it becomes a rival for Maya and 3DS Max.

Radiant Rig Help

Radiant Rig is my implementation of the paper “Raycast based auto-rigging method for Humanoid meshes” by Romain Lopez (ESGI Paris) and Christophe Poirel (ESGI Paris). It works only in Blender 2.6.8 and above. Radiant Rig depends upon Rigify. Radiant Rig automatically creates a human meta-rig sized to fit the selected figure. Download Radiant Rig here.

Installation

Rigify comes pre-installed in Blender. It needs to be activated in order for it to work with Radiant Rig.

1) Go into User Preferences (Windows CTRL+ALT+U or Macintosh CMD+,)

2) Click on “Addons” and search for “Rigging: Rigify”. Make certain there is a checkmark beside Rigify.

3) Click on “Install from file” and select the downloaded Radiant Rig Zip file.

4) Click on the box beside “Rigging: Radiant Rig” to active Radiant Rig.

5) Click on “Save User Settings”.

Usage

1) Click on ‘N’ to show the Properties Panel. Load your figure into Blender.

2) Click “Generate Auto-Rig”.

3) You might get the following message:

Calculation Error. Unable to find all limbs.
Possible Causes:
* Limbs are covering each other.
* Not a humanoid figure.
* Clothing mesh on top of figure: Try with split mesh.

4) Click on “Split Mesh”

5) When the splitting is complete, click on “Generate Auto-Rig”.

6) Once rig calculation is complete, a new rig based on the Human Meta-Rig will be generated.

6) Click on “Bing Rig” to bind both the clothing and the main figure to the rig.

7) Your rig is now attached to your figure.
